Chakri Memorial Day
6th April every year

The Nine Kings of the Chakri Dynasty.

Chakri Memorial Day is a public holiday that commemorates the founding of the Chakri Dynasty in 1782 by King Rama 1, known among Thais as Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke the Great who assumed power on April 6. During the day, the nation pays respects to all of the Kings of the Dynasty. Ceromonies are held in Bangkok led by the current King Bhumibol Adulyadej (The ninth king in this royal lineage) and his family.

Born in 1737 of noble Ayutthaya descent, "Thong Duang" was a commander who led many military campaigns over more than 20 years, against the Burmese forces who invaded the Kingdom of Siam (former name of Thailand). For his success and leadership, he was given the title of "Chaophraya Chakri", the equivalent of a modern Supreme Comander of the Armed Forces.

With the death of King Thaksin, Chaophraya Chakri, a beloved and greatly respected leader, ascended to the throne. The title Chakri was applied to the family line and remains the name of the Royal House. King Rama 1 established Krun-Thep (Bangkok) as the new captial of Siam and united the country to defeat the Burmese. He reigned until his death in 1809.
