This national holiday celebrates the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, 9th King of the Chakri dynasty, on 5th May 1950. Incidentally, this makes His Majesty the longest reigning living monarch in the world.
Although coronation day is on 5th May, celebrations last for three days. This begins on 3rd May when there is a ceremony led by the King himself at the Amarinda Vinichai Hall in the Grand Palace, dedicated to t the ancestors of the Royal Chakri House. During this ceremony, scriptures are chanted and a sermon delivered by a senior Monk.
On the second day, the Coronation Ceremonies begin with the proclamation of the Coronation Day read by the Cheif of Brahmin Priests, followed by an evening ceremony performed by Buddhist Monks.
On Coronation Day itself, a feast is given to Buddhist Monks, with the King dressed in full Royal Regalia. At noon, the Royal Thai Army and Navy each fire a 21-gun salute in honour of the King. It is also on coronation day that the King presents royal decorations to those who have made outstanding contributions to the country.
