Each temple owns and maintains a Dragon Boat. During the rowing festivals these boats, manned by as many as forty people, take part in races on the Mekong. There are actually many rowing festivals between late August and early October, though the one between 1st and 7th October has the highest turnout coinciding as it does with the Mekong Fireball Festival.
Beginning around late August, even when there are no races, you can often see teams practising in the late afternoon. More often, they can be heard as their time keeping chants drift across the river.
